of their own convention and it really is sort of like a sugar high. you see somebody like michelle obama give such an incredible speech about her husband. i think anybody married to michelle obama would have gotten a bounce out of that speech. but this is not the type of thing sustainable if you have the kind of jobs numbers that president obama. we had great headlines friday morning coming out of the convention. by noon friday, all the headlines very, very negative on the jobs picture. it will be tough to sustain it. he'll have to keep pushing to keep them up. >> preceding the jobs number, anne, as we step back from the conventions, realistically, will anything that happen in either of those events have any lasting effect? >> i do think it's possible. certainly bill clinton's speech to the extent it reminded voters that these two presidents were part of the same party, they share a philosophy. there were parts of bill clinton's speech that diverged from some of the other speakers going after bain and after wall street. that was not president clinton's message. president clinton could be memo

like michelle obama's first speech, too. secondly, i think when he -- we wrote about this in the "huffington post." when barack obama came into office it was with the idea you could change the way politics operated. instantaneo instantaneously, largely because of the economic crisis he inherited, he had to be an operative inside the political system, play an inside game, get a stimulus passed. when they were crafting health care, they had to cut deals or thought they had to cut deals. i think what changed everything is the debt ceiling deal. they tried to negotiate something there. it blew up in their faces. they said, you know what, rather than catering to the political realities, we have to shape the political realities. it hasn't necessarily been successful. the jobs bill still stalled. they got the bpayroll tax cut. it's a different type of politics than we saw in the first years and it's carried over into this election. >> alex, isn't this to some extent a question of language and tone? actually, over the last couple years much more so barack obama since the debt

'm not surprised at all because i've gotten to know her. she's fantastic. i also think michelle obama did a very good job. there were a lot of very good jobs, but i think the democrats had more appropriate people to the party than the republicans did. >> steve: there was also bill clinton who gave a great if not very long speech on behalf of the current president. >> he did. >> steve: the day after the president gave his speech, donald, and by all accounts, the president flat in comparison to some of the soaring rhetoric that we've heard in the past, the day after, out pops the jobs number and it just couldn't be worse for the white house.6,000d 368,000 people left the hunt for jobs. for every job created, four people dropped out. the economic news couldn't get worse for the president. >> right. it was a bad report. it was a very bad report, was not covered as badly and as -- the way it should have been, but frankly, i'm listening to made in america or made in the usa, regardless of what he's saying, why isn't he doing something about china? he never attacks china. he's not stopping the problem
